Get Involved: Student Government Association 101

Getting involved with student government is common in high school and a popular entry as an extracurricular activity on college applications. Did you know doing the same thing in college can pay off through increased leadership skills and a boost for your résumé?

At Eastern Florida State College, the collegewide Student Government Association is the organization that ensures students have a voice on campus.

This student-run organization, is comprised of an elected SGA Council of officers that serves the entire study body, as well as four campus-based SGA Activity Boards that are made up of students who apply to take part.

“Our goal in Student Government is to empower our students and build a strong networking community,” EFSC’s 2023-24 SGA Council President, Aya Aseid said. “If you want to become a leader and support your peers, I highly encourage you to run for a government position. You will not regret it.”

Every college and university will have some form of student government organization. At EFSC, the collegewide SGA Council handles funding requests for events, activities, and travel made by student clubs, organizations, individuals, and groups.

EFSC’s SGA Activity Boards and Student Ambassadors work alongside the Student Life Coordinators on each campus to create and carry out campus events and activities that foster student engagement.

These events provide opportunities for students to gather, network, and enjoy campus activities that enhance their collegiate experience, in addition to increasing social awareness of campus initiatives, student clubs, and monthly themes and celebrations that bring the community together.

“It has been fun getting involved with EFSC and getting an insight into what others want to see and change in the community,” said 2023-24 SGA Secretary, Erica Williams. “I highly recommend joining SGA if you have been considering being a part of EFSC and the opportunities it has to offer!”

Steven Kirksey, the 2023-24 SGA Council Parliamentarian, said that his role has allowed him to meet people and have experiences that he would have not had otherwise plus make memories and friends that he will never forget.

“Getting involved in Student Government also helped me become a better student by helping me consider myself part of the college opposed to just being a student going to classes,” Kirksey said. “I encourage anyone considering, even if you are nervous or unsure, to run for Student Government at EFSC.”

Prospective employers are looking for multi-faceted employees who have academic success, plus leadership and teamwork skills that translate into success in the workplace.

“As an EFSC international student and SGA Council member, I have learned many instructive things for my personal and professional life,” said 2023-24 SGA Council Vice President, Sebastian Rueda Sanchez. “I have met great people and friends. This has been an experience that will remain in my heart for the rest of my life.”

Note: Student Government elections are held every spring at EFSC. Applications for collegewide SGA Council officer positions for the 2023-24 Academic Year are being accepted through 11:59 PM on Sunday, February 26, 2023 and elections will take place March 6-10. If you’re a current EFSC student, learn more and submit your online SGA Application to run for office or apply for a Campus Activity Board or Student Ambassador position. Your résumé will thank you!
